NYERI, Kenya April 17th – In a bid to enhance media engagement and raise awareness among members of the fourth estate, the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), in partnership with the Media Council of Kenya, convened a forum with journalists and content creators in Nyeri.
This initiative aimed to sensitize media professionals on Kenya’s data protection framework and the pivotal role of the ODPC in regulating the processing of personal data.
The session was led by Deputy Director of Corporate Communications Dalton Mbondo. He emphasized the significance of responsible reporting and content creation in the digital age, highlighting the necessity for media practitioners to comprehend how personal data should be handled and protected.
Participants were introduced to the ODPC’s regulatory frameworks and guidelines designed to support compliance within media operations. The engagement provided a valuable platform for dialogue on how journalists can report responsibly on issues involving personal information while safeguarding the privacy rights of individuals.
Moreover, attendees gained practical insights into best practices for managing personal data in their journalistic work. The session reaffirmed the ODPC’s commitment to strengthening public awareness of its mandate and promoting responsible data practices. It also underscored the essential role of the media in shaping public conversations on privacy, fostering trust in Kenya’s digital ecosystem, and supporting broader national efforts to promote responsible personal data management.
