Nyeri, Kenya — July 4: The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, Hon. William Kabogo, officially opened the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) Regional Office in Nyeri. This marks a significant step in the ODPC’s mission to decentralize data protection services across the country.
With the launch of the Nyeri office, ODPC now has eight regional offices, bringing services closer to citizens and making data protection services more accessible. They include Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa, Machakos, and Garissa.
This strategic expansion aligns with ODPC’s commitment to decentralizing services, promoting data rights awareness, and strengthening the nationwide enforcement of the Data Protection Act, 2019.
During the event, the Cabinet Secretary also unveiled the ODPC Strategic Plan 2025-2029, a roadmap guiding the future of data protection in Kenya. The plan outlines three key strategic issues derived from a comprehensive situational and stakeholder analysis, along with three corresponding strategic goals.
The Strategic Plan reflects the government’s overall commitment to promoting data protection in the country. Its implementation over the next five years is expected to significantly enhance Kenya’s position as an ICT hub and investment destination, improving the data protection landscape and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
“This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the digital rights of citizens and reinforcing public trust in the digital economy. The Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE) is dedicated to ensuring that the necessary data protection laws, regulations, and international conventions are developed and domesticated accordingly. MICDE supports the realization of ODPC’s mandate to regulate the processing of personal data and protect individuals’ privacy, among other roles,” he remarked.
He was accompanied by Mr. John Tonui, Postmaster General and CEO of the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK); Emmanuel Kimeu, ICT Secretary for Security and Audit Control; and Mr. Savio Wambugu, ICTA Board Director. Also in attendance were Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) Vice Chancellor Prof. Eng. Peter N. Muchiri, Nyeri County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi, and other senior officials.
